The Rakiura Whitetail Trust exists to protect one of New Zealand’s most distinctive wild herds. The whitetail deer of Stewart Island / Rakiura.
Known as the Grey Ghosts of Rakiura, these deer have become part of the island’s identity and a living link to our hunting heritage.
Our mission is simple but vital:
To ensure the continued survival of the Rakiura whitetail herd through science-led, community-driven conservation. We combine research, monitoring, and active management to keep the herd healthy and in balance with the island’s fragile ecosystems.
We believe hunters can and should be conservationists. By applying evidence, transparency, and collaboration, we aim to show what responsible, modern game management looks like in Aotearoa.

Rakiura Stewart Island
At the southern edge of Aotearoa, Stewart Island/Rakiura is a place of rugged coastlines, ancient forests, and a deep sense of wilderness. It is here that the largest and most enduring herd of whitetail deer in New Zealand has thrived for over a century.
While smaller populations exist on the mainland, Rakiura remains the spiritual home of the whitetail in this country. The island’s deer are woven into its history and identity, symbolising both the challenges and the beauty of living alongside a rare species. Protecting them means safeguarding a living link between hunting heritage and conservation.
